Slieve Foy Carlingford
« on: March 09, 2010 »

Took a drive through Carlingford and saw this hill, it looks pretty cool from the town and from what i hear there are some really good scrambles. Has any one been up there or know any info on it?

I did the event photography for the Cooley Raid which was an adventure race held in and around Carlingford.  Was really surprised by how good the mountains looked there, and I think they even slipped in a checkpoint on top of one of the summits.  I think Spark was helping out at the event so she might be able to tell us more about the area?  I'd definitely like to make a visit sometime!

I was on Slieve Foye today and was well impressed with it, lots of scrambling spots and a particualry good one called the chimney (so i'm told by a local i met up there) was very misty and windy today  but i hope to return in better weather for some exploring. Also spotted a good camping spot on Eagle Rocks,

I love Foye. Done the IMRA (Mountain Running) race on it last September and was one of the most enjoyable runs I done in 2012. Done loads of training on it's slopes as well. It's a beautiful mountain when viewed from Carlingford and the views from the summit on a clear day are fantastic - I always love gazing over at the Mournes and picking out the different peaks.

It's also one of the County Tops of Ireland/Northern Ireland and is one of three County Tops in close proximity to each other, the others being Slieve Donard and the mythical Slieve Gullion. I've been thinking of a challenge that could incorporate these '3 peaks' which will hopefully come to fruition one day.

Here's a piece I done on Foye some time back, photo in there of the views over to the Mournes - http://www.walkingandhikingireland.com/the-county-tops-number-1-slieve-foye-county-louth/

Here's another piece I done more recently on Slieve Gullion - http://www.walkingandhikingireland.com/the-county-tops-number-6-slieve-gullion-county-armagh/. Really interesting background to this mountain..
