Title: 2012 Christmas Dinner and Camp - Sat 15th December
Post by: RedLeader on November 13, 2012
(http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/images/Christmas-camp-2012-Large.jpg)

Here we go again folks. The 2010 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1500.msg13997#msg13997) and 2011 (http://www.ni-wild.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2632.0) Christmas dinner camps were absolutely brilliant. We'd a veritable feast and a great laugh around the fire and it's fair to say they are two of the best camps I've ever been on. This years party will be on Sat 15th December @ Annalong Wood. As usual it will be family friendly so wrap everyone up warm and get up there for some fun!

Confirm you're coming by replying below with the item(s) you're bringing and I'll add you to the list. If necessary, feel free to duplicate, the more we have of anything the better. If you're bringing something not on the list we'll add it, feel free to get creative.

I will bring christmas crackers and mince pies ( Tip Top Squirty Cream is that cream ok http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=255821338 (http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=255821338)) as I am doing a 2 day journey to there, as I have no car. so it be pointless for me to bring proper food.

the night before the christmas camp, me and my brother is camping in the valley, near annalong woods, the next morning we will then head to the christmas camp.

the day after the christmas camp, is there anyone that is heading past newcastle, that has room for me and my brother in there car, that we could get dropped off at the newcastle bus station?

your help will be very much appreciated.

Good Stuff, Tip Top is spot on... I love it when a feast comes together  ;)

90% of peeps heading home from camp will be going through Newcastle.  If I'm travelling by car I will take you.  Slight chance I might be on the Motorbike though.

We'll done everybody for claiming your food item for the Christmas Feast so quickly... Especially the big stuff!!!

Looks like we only have Gravy, Mushy Peas and a Cheese Board to be volunteered for and we're done  ;D

Hope you know what you've taken on Lenny with the Turkey lol  I've done it two years on the trot and it's good fun getting 18lb of Meat and Stuffing up the hill... Think yourself lucky it's Annalong this year and not the leg busting slopes of Donard!

Here's a reminder of the last two festive birds to get everybody in the mood:

That's what I did the last couple of years...  The juices were used to make about 4 pints of Turkey Gravy and then I boiled the gravy at camp in a large pot then put the turkey into it to heat it before serving.

OK so I will take care or the gravy as well.

But I am sorry to disappoint but I cant afford a whole turkey to feed everyone so I have bought 3 large turkey tins from Iceland. I  will pre cook them then re heat in gravy at the camp fire.

Can someone else do the stuffing?

I'm bringing a couple of bottles of mulled wine for the group to share, but another couple of bottles for other people won't go a miss, that stuff goes quick.

Yeap, nobody will be denounced for bring additional Mulled into the Campsite so, if you have space in your ruck, squeeze a bottle in and if you don't have space in your ruck then practise your Bushcraft and lash a bottle to the side... It will not go to waste  ;)

Same goes for any other little extras you may think of... The list of stuffs above is not exhaustive so feel free to surprise us with any time-forgotten family traditions you fancy e.g. Yule Logs (The edible one), Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire or the makings of a Sexy Mrs Santa Shot (http://voices.yahoo.com/christmas-cocktail-recipes-sexy-miss-santa-crazy-7337308.html) for everybody  :D

If we all pull out the stops we can make this the best Christmas Camp so far!!!

I was just thinking about Annalong and if there are large numbers it can be quite hard to find space for the tents, has anyone considered Fofanny damn and it's wood.
I'm just thinking that from the time we did the Mourne way there was loads of space for the tents, a good sized river right beside it and plenty of wood.

It's just a thought but what do you think?

car parking could be an issue mate, you could park in meelmore but then its a mucky track round the mourne way to fofanny? Im not bothered either way, but Im thinking of folk bringing kids etc? Could be tricky for them?

Post by: Rumblebum on November 25, 2012
Yeah I'd thought about the parking and it always seems to be an issue around that area, I'd had the idea of using the sliproad that takes you into Fofanny damn, I'm sure it would be safe enough.
I'd just thought it would be a shorter walk for everybody and a easier for the tents, but hey Im still more than happy to use Annalong.

Post by: Matthew on November 25, 2012
I am not sure how legal it is to camp at the Fofanny, it would be a shame to get set up and then be moved on. A big group may well be noticed. I think Annalong is still the answer as we have never had any trouble there.

The gate is always closed at the entrance to the dam and the property is owned by the water board, don't think we would be flavour of the month if we parked and blocked the entrance.

We'll Guys and Girls, the count down to the Christmas Dinner has begun... Just 5 more sleeps (or possibly one if your an insomniac).

We will be aiming to serve dinner at 7:30pm, after pre-dinner Mulled Wine, so everybody involved with the food can plan on how they are going to have their contribution heated and ready to serve at that time.

7:30pm is a bit later than last year but with it being closer to Christmas it will also allow peeps to get out and get a bit of Christmas Shopping done or spend some time with the family time before disappearing into the hills.  Always got to consider the Brownie Points.

Also, knowing what time grub will be served will allow folks to have a late lunch etc so that they are not drooling all over camp with hunger and anticipation of the feast that awaits  :D

I am planning to cook my Mashed Potato and Champ fresh that morning and then head straight to camp.  I'm hoping to be at the campsite for about 2pm to re-arrange the fire circle, to accommodate the extra bums, and to try and fashion some sort of heating rack for warming the various foods.

I am soooooooo looking forward to this.

I am really looking forward to this too! Myself and mourneman should be arriving around 1630-1700 all being well! We had discussed a smaller fire for cooking away from the main camp fire? surfnscenic said at the last camp he has some grills from an old barbecue that he could bring, just means we could heat the food more gently and would be better for keeping stuff warm etc?
Anyone any thoughts?

If I'm up at 2:30ish, as I plan to be, I will try and make up another smaller fire pit close-by that we can set grills etc on.

After spuds post I had a look. Page 10 MountainerIreland said he would do a bit of mincing action, so I'll do the crackers.

Sorry... I didn't see the post Mounteerireland put up about the mincing... I'll edit the list now and put you on the Crackers.  We'll be wanting to see them handed out Gangham Style. You better get rehearsing the routine  ;D

Keep an eye on the list of attendees in the first post.  There are 25 going so far so you might need another mince pie  ;)

The Mourne Rambler only runs in summer months: http://www.mourne-mountains.com/mournes/information/the-mourne-rambler-bus-service/

I'll be bringing xmas cake too.
If I can find some cartons of custard I might bring it too, we could make custard up from powder, but that mightn't taste the best

I was thinking a wee bowl of xmas pudding doused in hot custard would be just the ticket.

Yeap... sounds like a plan.  We have talked about this a few times but were just too lazy to put it into action!!!  :-[
I cud bring up a large b b q grill thats not needed any more ,
Also if a few people brought up a bag of charcoal its a good steady
heat for the food etc .
If I'm up at 2:30ish, as I plan to be, I will try and make up another smaller fire pit close-by that we can set grills etc on.

Man, I can almost taste the Turkey already  :D

If there's anybody joining us that hasn't got their name down for something, and would like to bring something to the party, then a bag of charcoal wouldn't be a bad idea.  As Fourman says, it gives off a good steady heat and could be used in a smaller fire pit beside the main fire to keep things warm before serving  :)

I think this year's going to be a classic. The weather looks horrible at the mo but it's supposed to clear up at lunch on Sat and stay fine until Sunday lunch. What more could you ask for! It's also due to be mostly cloudless with a new moon and it's the end of the Perseids meteor shower so we might get a bit of a spectacle.

I know it has been hinted at a few times already but if there is anyone who is not down for bringing anything already, more mulled wine would be appreciated by all I'm sure.  Between Rumblebum and I we'll have about four bottles-worth (along with the other food stuff), a bit more would ensure there was plently to go round  8)

My original plan was to be at camp about 14:00 but to be honest I'm having a bit of a Whitey about Christmas Shopping, as I haven't started yet  :(

So... I'm probably going to get my Mash/Champ made first thing tomorrow morning then hit the shops for a while and then aim to arrive at camp about an our before darkness (Dusk, not The Darkness (http://www.muzu.tv/thedarkness/christmas-time-dont-let-the-bells-end-video-music-video/218207/), their not coming).  I'm guessing that will be about 15:30-16:00.

And, in answer to Spuds question "Am I excited",  We'll in the words of Stu Francis... Oooh!!! I could Crush a Grape  :D

One of the guys had the idea of using charcoal for heating the food, as it would be a nice even heat, we will need all the wood for the campfire, I sense it's gonna be a late one!!

Brilliant camp, couldn't have been better.

Thanks to Greyfox for setting everything up, I appreciated the effort when the fire was keeping me warm.
Thanks to Liam for the decorations.
Thanks to Anne for the lift into town afterwards
Thanks to everyone else who brought some variation of food, there's too many to name, everything was perfect.

I would have been extremely jealous if I missed out on last nights camp, glad I could see everyone again.

Here's some of my pictures

I'm very impressed by the amount of effort everyone put in, the time spent preparing food and getting it all to camp, and the way people came together to help each other get to camp with lifts etc. great teamwork, well done everyone, looking back at all the photos is just the icing on the cake of a great night  :)

here's a wee pic that i think shows the effort made

I thought John packed light compared to usual.  ;D

But in all fairness John bringing an extra rucksack full of spare headtorches for everyone was very considerate. Better safe than sorry!

It was a top top night and as others have said a big effort was made by all.  A massive thank you to Greyfox, sorry I didn't get a chance to chat to you, but all your hard work set us up for a great night.  That must have been back-breaking work!

Great photos and a very cheeky one  ;)  I had to do a double-take.

Another great night and a heck of a lot if effort was to put in to make it such a good camp. We had a roaring fire, flashing lights, mountains of food and the drink was plentiful. And thankfully we were blessed with a night of cracker weather!
It's hard to see how these camps are to get any better, thanks to one and all.

Thanks to all, roll on next year!

Really enjoyed my first NI-Wild Christmas Camp.  What a mountain of food and such a variety of it.  The fire and lights were tremendous.  Thanks to all the contributors.
Really nice to meet up with other Wilders especially those whom I had not met before.  I look forward to getting out for other walks and camps in 2013.  Might even get out over the holiday period.  I will keep an eye to the forum.

You have to enjoy the moment. Just when you mention that, I'm heading out tonight for a few hams with the guys I play 5-a-side football with. Must remember to go easy on the rum truffles.

Mixing hams can be troublesome. Kicking off with the honey glazed is fine but by closing time you're onto the Gammon and once you've had a quick hog roast nightcap you're definitely heading for a hangover.

Those whiskey truffles were strong.
I didn't notice on the sat night because I had been drinking the laphroaig, but had a few the next morning and definitely noticed that whiskey kick!
