Title: 2010 NI-Wild Supermeet
Post by: RedLeader on June 23, 2010
This meet has been postponed until later in the year.

We've been pondering trying to have a big meet for all members plus family and friends.

Nothing has been planned yet and we're after ideas. At the moment we're thinking of a big BBQ - somewhere were it's easy to drive to and pitch tents close to cars. That way everyone can come and there's no hassle bringing kids and partners.

Anyone any ideas?

Specifically:
* Location - where would be good to hold it. Somewhere that we can park, stay overnight and light a fire and make a bit of noise. Ideally someone knows someone with a field somewhere (we're very tidy!)

* What to do - BBQ seems ideal but what else. Maybe some activities for everyone or maybe just the kids

* When - Maybe a weekend at the end of July so there's plenty of time to prepare

Post your thoughts

I'm up for that but I'll be leaving on the 5th of August so if possible sometime before that. Would be good to meet up with a few others from the forum.

You can count me and Kat in.  Supermeet could be like an annual NI-Wild get together :)

Location - don't know any one with a field I'm afraid!  A farm campsite like Meelmore is my only suggestion, but perhaps if we contacted them in advance they would let us use the lower field away from all the "families" that go there.  Only problem is the fire would be restricted to fire logs, unless someone gets all fancy and brings one of those metal fire pit type things!

What to do - definitely a big BBQ!  And a bit of craic on site that any one can join in with such a five-a-side, rounders etc.  If we were dead keen I wonder if we could get some one down to show us a bit of archery or something?

When - End of July sounds good.  What about the 31st of July?

Yeah sounds good. Are there any other camp sites around there that would have a field area like meelmore, just after the post about them I'd be surprised if they allowed a bus of us to descend on their "pristine" grounds  ;D

I think if we called Meelmore in advance and let them know they might be okay with it.  Could be wrong of course, but when I was there last year there was a massive 4x4 club with associated vehicles having a weekender there.  Was pretty envious of their Defenders flying through the mud!

Did some one put a post up a while ago about a similar campsite to Meelmore but on the Bloody Bridge side of the Mournes?

There is a site at Bloody Bridge and I hear they have some usable fire pits. Has a bit of potential!

This is an awesome idea...  The 31st of July would be good with me.

I have a mate in Killinchy that has a lot of land and I've just came of the phone with him.  There's a chance we might be able to borrow a field for an evening.  May need to do a bit of a whip-round and throw 50 quid his way but apparently there are a few options.  One field is beside a lake, but might be a hazard for children.  Another field is beside a river that would be suitable for drinking etc if boiled first.  One worry he has is that he wouldn't want to be held responsible if anybody was injured on his land.  I think they may have had a problem in the past, after doing a favour like this.  With this in mind, we may have to arrange some sort of disclaimer to give him peace of mind.

BBQ on site would be no problem and an open fire would also be a goer.  We could get up a day or two before and leave some wood on site.

My mate is gonna run this past his father, who actually owns the land, and come back to me on Monday.

He does know another land owner, also in Killinchy, who could possibly provide a site.  It would be the site of the World Famous Pigstock ha ha: http://www.pigstockfestival.co.uk/

I'll let you know how I get on... but keep the suggestions coming incase this goes pear shaped.  ::)

Sounds stellar. Everyone is always[\b] responsible for their own safety anyway and wherever we go we would have to pay per tent anyways. Can't imagine anyone having an issue signing a standard disclaimer of some sort.

Bloody bridge campsite sounds like the ticket to me - it has the views and is handy to Newcastle - for fish and chips and a bar - and has proper toilets - I'm sure that's a bonus...

Hi would love to see it near some water, to encourage more watersports ie kayaking, an ideal spot would be portballintrea, or for hiking aswel near the glenarm river...

I 'might' be able to get down far the evening after work but everything's in flux at the minute, so can't say for sure.

Sounds good though.

Awesome. We've not seen you in ages.

We're thinking of Bloody Bridge campsite which is coastal, close to the Mournes and allows fires. If you can think of anywhere else we'd certainly consider it.

Will their be any equipment hire, ie kayaks to run the bloody river, I know that their are groups that run it as I done it years ago?

At the moment the plan is purely a meet and eat of some sort rather than an activity weekend. However, people can organise whatever activities they want to do on the day.

We're going to postpone this for the time being. Watch this space and we'll maybe kick this off again later in the year.
