Hello,

Any chance anybody wants to off load a seriously warm (and relatively light) down sleeping bag.  Preferably rated to at least -10 !

What do you need it for?  If it's a one-off thing I could rent you my PHD Hispar.  It has a full zip (R), 1400g, Comfort to -17.

Might sell too, but I'd be looking at least £250 for it.

I'd be up for renting it too, as if I can't buy a suitable one cheaply enough, I'll be renting one anyways.

Why i want it !!!!!  The exciting bit....  I'm heading to Nepal in a few weeks, so it can get as low as -25 at altitude, so I need a better bag :-)

The 700.  I got it a couple of years ago before they discovered 900 down, so that's why the weight and temp figures are slightly different, and they are about 30-40% more expensive!

Nepal - very awesome!  What are you doing - trek /climb, tents /lodges?  My Hispar has already been to Nepal, so it could show you around

Class, it would be a good luck charm and might settle my mums nerves to know i've a sleeping bag thats already been there - and come home again!

I'm keeping my options open at the moment, but I suppose I'll be doing the Annapurna Circuit and have some down time to chill afterwards.   

Which treks did you do \ would recommend ?

I did Everest Base Camp, also staying in the tea houses.  It was start of April, and everything froze in the room, but better than outside.  I wore baselayers and hat mainly to keep my oily hair off the bag*, but it was toasty.  Was also in a tent at Island Peak base camp, and had it out on a thermarest at -12.

You can pick up some genuine gear over there for about 1/3 less, if you are thinking of crampons/ ax /helmet / jacket etc.  I was in a big Mountain Hardware store in Kathmandu, think there is North Face also.
My trip was somewhat squeezed as an offer that couldn't be turned down, and I'd already maxed the credit card on my Island Peak extension... so declined to fill my duffle with goodies, but it's a distinct possibility.


* to prepare for a warm shower at a tea house, start taking your showers as cold as you can at home. May be more comfortable (& cheaper) to pay for a litre of boiling water in your nalgene and use a sponge

So, you'd suggest a nalgene instead of a sigg bottle ?  I've never heard of them before, but I see they're quite cheap....

Well, not really - I am more a SIGG fan*.  Any Nalgene bottle I've had I feel the need to tighten the lid quite a bit to get a good seal and it sooner than later breaks.  That and the lid retainer thing annoys me.  But they are wide mouth and about 1/2 RRP out there... I ended up getting one as the bottled water is really expensive: it's cheaper to buy boiled water from the lodge, but you can't put boiling water in a Camelbak!

Buy 2x 1L out there for this purpose - you'll be drinking loads due to dry air and acclimatisation effects on the body.


* Of course, the SIGG narrow lid is a bit annoying, as is the poor sports top - wish there was a retrofit camelbak bottle-straw attachment.  There is an American company making similar bottles with a wide mouth, so may need to check them out.

You can put boiling water in a platypus though.......I'm nearly certain, read it on OM yonks ago about using them as a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag. Think someone tried it with a Source bladder and it melted though  not a great night to have a down sleeping bag!

That would be a strange one for the hospital - 3rd degree burns followed by hypothermia 

I'm not testing anything... there's youtube channels for stuff like that!

The alloy walls of a Sigg bottle get really hot when you pour hot water into them, but apparently if you slip the Sigg inside a woolly sock it stops it from burning you and makes for a cosy hot water bottle.  So I've heard any way, personally I've never tested it

There is!

At least there was, It was called the "HydroTube". Retailed for around £15. Although they don't seem to make it any more, it didn't get very good reviews which may have something to do with it....
