Washing Day Sack/Rucksack
« on: August 09, 2013 »

Has anyone ever put a small bag (24litres off the top of my head) through the washing machine? I've a Berghaus one I use for carrying clothes and lunch while cycling to work everyday.  I sweat loads and the bag is beginning to smell. I was going to put it through the washing machine either on a fast wash at a low temp or the hand wash setting followed by a rinse and spin.

just wondering if anyone else had done something similar.

my normal day sack, I have washed and then reproofed. if its a cheap sack its worth the risk. don't know that id risk it on a more expensive pack though. if it all goes pear shaped you're only out 20 or 30 quid then.

Generally wouldn't risk it, the stitching & straps etc may not stand up to the spin. For me it's elbow work. Providing you have a cordura/nylon based pack then get a good nail brush and luke warm water with very little soap. Scrub away by hand then a good hose off and dry in the air.

Yeah, after 3 years of daily use my Berghaus Remote 30 needed a good clean! It has straps and buckles everywhere on it so I opened all the zips and pockets and put it in a pillow case: 30 degree delicates wash, then stuck some TX Direct in to add some DWR back in.
After, just pour out the water and hang it up... it'll mostly be dry overnight - padding takes a bit longer.

Some of the PU laminate backing is coming away around the material at the top of my pack but it has had loads of abuse. It's not a big deal as water gets in anyway. Still years of service left in it (and maybe some more frequent washes)  ;D
