Title: O/T - Royal Python & Box Turtle For Sale...
Post by: Drongo on December 21, 2010
Hi All...

It's not outdoor related, Sorry, but I've an adult Royal Python and a Box Turtle which are needing a new home if anyone is interested...?

New baby on the way, and we've run out of room...

£40 each or £70 for the both animals, including oak veneer vivariums (less than a year old), and all lights, feed & water bowls, hides etc...

I'll get some photo's added soon if anyone interested...?

I'd be divorced if I brought a snake home but I'd love to see some photos out of sheer curiosity.

What age is your Royal?  I had a beautiful Royal Python for a few years but I just ran out of space for housing her so sold her back to the guy in City Reptiles.  She was a good 3ft by the time she left me, but I was also facing objections from other folk in the house over keeping rats, hamsters and guinea pigs in the freezer ;D

:) ok a couple of questions

1. Do they smell?
2. does the snake require dead things (mice etc) to be fed to it? (ok just seen other post Jason would flip)
3. Would there be a risk of snakey eating my house rabbit?

Hope Drongo doesn't mind me jumping in, but just to give my opinion:

1.  Snakes don't smell, but like any other animal you need to keep their living space clean.  Really all this means is changing the water regularly and every once in awhile changing the bark in the vivarium and giving it a wipe down.  They are very low maintenance though!

2.  Snakes feed on dead food, and the bigger the snake the bigger the food.  My Royal started on pinkie mice and I gradually increased the size of the mice as she grew until she moved on to rats.  I bought the mice and rats from City Reptiles in Belfast.  They sell them frozen, so you need to store them in the freezer at home.  I just kept mine in a zip lock bag inside a sealed Tupperware container on the bottom shelf, below the pizza ;)  Good thing is you can buy the food in bulk and keep it for ages.  Snakes dont feed all that often so its not like feeding a dog a couple of times a day or anything.

3.  It's unlikely a Royal would go after something as big as a house rabbit, but its not going to be a problem anyway as the snake wont be roaming around the house.  Mind you, I probably wouldnt risk putting them in an enclosed space together and you might be surprised how much damage a rabbit could do to a snake in an enclosed space.  Thats why you feed snakes dead food, as when you take away the element of stealth and put a snake and an small animal in an enclosed space the animal can do a lot of biting and scratching!

Personally I think Royals make great pets and are a great reptile to keep.  They look like a "real" snake and mine was extremely docile despite her size.  Like I said, they are also very low maintenance, my only word of warning is that collecting reptiles can get somewhat addictive :)

Thanks for the  info! after a quick survey from the family I apparently will have no visitors if a snake appears in the house. Could have benefits I suppose..

Drongo I will send you a message soon once I have had a chat with himself :)

Cheers to monkey for the info, there's little more to say about the snake...

The turtle is a box turtle (species unknown although I think it's an Eastern Box) which are land turtles, a bit like a tortoise...

There is some info on them HERE (http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/midorcas/research/Contribute/box%20turtle/boxinfo.htm).

It's at least 30 years old, it used to belong to school from the days where they studies animal biology in class however I've had it for over a year now as due to cut backs in the department the animal house was being removed and the animals with them.

It lives in a 3' vivarium, with a UV tube to maintain healthy bone and shell growth, a spot lamp for heat to aid digestion, a plastic tray with moss/bark to give it somewhere damp to hang out and a feed and water bowl...

I clean the turtle about once a month, maybe less which consists of dumping the moss in the compost heap, wiping out the tank with a mild detergent solution and putting it all back again with fresh moss...

Feed is dry feed (heaps included in sale), with the occasional bit of leafy greens, squash, and sometimes terrapin food which has dried worms, shrimp, fish in it...

This time of year it doesn't eat much...

Summer time it can go outside on the grass, and providing it has somewhere secure, with a damp area and dry warm area and shade from the sun (chicken run or similar would be great, see photo) it would do all right for 6 months or more during our summer.  It will eat grass, leaves dandelions etc (providing you don't use chemicals on your lawn)

Just a wee update the turtle has been kidnapped!!! :o

The wee sister (who an is adult allegedly) has taken the turtle away to her home. He has been living with her for the past month now.

She believed he was rightfully her chrimbo pressie from me and has been santering at me everyday until I handed him over.
