compression sack
« on: July 30, 2010 »

Can anyone recmomend a good brand of compression sack?  Am intending to do the Mourne marathon and ended up having to buy a larger tent than I really needed.   Bought a vango banshee 300 (2.5Kg) as I needed something that could be carried on MMM but I'd be able to use during year with the wife and my eldest girl.  I'm not overly concerned about the weight (split between 2) but would like to be able to reduce the pack size.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I went for the Exped dry bags which you can buy in a set of 4.  I bought mine from Surf Mountain, linky here.  Dont forget you can get discount from Surf Mountain at the moment as well, more info here.

I've had them in my rucksack in some pretty foul weather and they kept everything inside dry.  They are also great for stuffing the tent into when they are wet, as they stop the wet tent soaking everything else in your rucksack.  I have a Vango Tempest 200 which is probably a similar size to the Banshee 300.  I find the inner tent fits nicely in the yellow (small) bag and the outer fits nicely in the red (medium) bag.

I use pod sacks for everything including one for random stuff that doesn't need keeping dry. Is just an easy way to gather stuff together.

I just use dry bags, as Lenny says they compress your gear as well. The Exped bags use a roll top system, so you squeeze the air out then roll down the top and fasten with buckle. They are lighter than compression sacks that come with tents or sleeping bags and much more versatile.  With a bit of practice you can get your gear really well compressed with them and I don't bother using the compression sacks that came with my tent at all.

Exped compression sacks are the war forward; they were a lifesaver while I was away. With a bit of practice they perform just like compression sacks. They definitely keep kit dry, I wandered through two waterfalls and the camera was as dry as a bone inside.
