Title: Sperrin routes?
Post by: Rich.H on July 07, 2013
Hoping for some tips on some good challenging walks in the Sperrin area. I took a look on the walk NI site and was out today for the Banagher Forest route. While some parts did do some hurt to my legs overall it was just a pleasant walk that gave me not much more than some sore feet after near 12 miles. This was to be expected since I am out of shape anyway.

So I'm after some good walks of no less than 10 miles, with some good climbs along with off trail walking to force me to apply real navigation skills instead of just following a map pathway. If possible also something longer for a weekend route would be great.

I had a good look at the Sperrin area map but can't see on it where I would have issues with farmland or could just wander freely myself to makeup my own routes, so anyone with tips or some local knowledge would be a great boon thanks in advance.

Not walked anything in the sperrins myself, but I wonder if these folks would be able to give you a pointer? http://www.sperrins.co.uk/

Or there's a couple of routes mapped: http://www.sperrintrekkers.com/Pages/RouteDetails.aspx

The Antrim Rambler (http://theantrimrambler.blogspot.co.uk/) is a local blogger who has walked a fair bit in the Sperrins.  Blog updates include maps.  The only problem on the site is that the index system is by date rather than route so you'll have to hoke through a bit to find some of what you are looking for.  Well I say "hoke" but you'll enjoy doing so, there are some great trip reports on there.
