Fermanagh Walking
« on: September 16, 2011 »

Got the following sent to me today.  May be of interest to some, especially those that would like to discover what Fermanagh has to offer by way of walking, but don't know where to start!

Dear All,

Please see the information below in relation to Geopark events that are taking place this autumn.  Booking is essential for all events. For more information on any of these events or to book a place please contact the Marble Arch Caves Visitor's Centre on 028 6634 8855 or via e-mail at info@marblearchcaves.com.

We hope to see you at some of our events and please free to pass on this information to anyone else whom you feel maybe interested.

Sunday 18th September
Geopark Nature Walk: Killeshandra Looped Walk
Part of Fáilte Ireland’s Looped Walk Network, the forest and lake walk in Killeshandra is one of the most tranquil and relaxing of our Geopark walks. Join local wildlife expert, Heather Bothwell for this gentle stroll and find out about the wide range of trees, birds, insects and mammals that are all found along the way.
The walk will leave from the Town Lake car park (The Strand) on the Belturbet Road at 2pm and will return at approximately 4pm. Please wear stout footwear and bring warm, waterproof clothing. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential for this event.

Sunday 2nd October

Join Geopark staff and celebrate National Trails Day with for a guided walk and scavenger hunt though the majestic grounds of Florence Court Forest.  The meeting point will be the Forest Service Car Park at 2:00p.m. and the event will last for approximately 2 hours. Fermanagh District Council, with assistance from the Fermanagh Ramblers and Hillwalkers Club, Knockatallan Ramblers, Coonian Rambling Club, the National Trust and Disability Sports Northern Ireland has put together a diverse weekend walking programme based in the Castle Coole, Florencecourt, Cuilcagh Mountain and Sliabh Beagh areas of County Fermanagh.  The walking festival will take place on Saturday 8th, Sunday 9th and Monday 10th October 2011.

Participation in this festival is FREE of charge and there are various grades of walks available including Family, Intermediate, Advanced and Inclusive walks. Please find attached below information flyer outlining festival details (I don't know how to attach a pdf to NI-Wild posts, but can send it on for anyone interested).  For more information about the Fermanagh walking Festival please contact Grainne O'Connor or Liz Nolan on 028 6632 5050 or via e-mail at grainne.oconnor@fermanagh.gov.uk or liz.nolan@fermanagh.gov.uk or Textphone 028 6632 7969.  This event is taking palce in association with the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark.

‘On the Mammal Trail’
Saturday 15th October
Lough Navar Forest is full of mammals such as red squirrels and red deer but due to their shy nature we don’t often get the chance to see them. Join Forest Service and Geopark staff and hear the sounds and look for clues that let us know these fascinating mammals are actually living in our forests. This event will involve driving to and walking around various points within the Forest.  There will be no more than 3km of walking in total.
This event will begin at 7:00p.m. and will last for approximately 2 hours.  Warm waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are essential.  This event is not suitable for wheelchair users or persons with limited mobility and all children must be accompanied by an adult.  Please feel free to bring along drinks and snacks for this event.
The meeting point for this event is the entrance to Lough Navar Forest.  Lough Navar Forest is located off the minor Derrygonnelly – Belleek road.  The entrance to Lough Navar Forest is adjacent to Correl Glen National Nature Reserve (GR H076547). Lough Navar Forest is signposted throughout the County using brown tourist road signs.
