Cave-ing it!
« on: August 18, 2009 »

was out climbing today at lower cove and I discovered a cave,(didnt have a torch so i didnt venture in) might be fun to spend a night in it, perhaps bring a few firelogs as there isn't much to light a fire with up there.

Just an Idea, I loked the idea of using the mountains as shelter, anyone been in? perhaps its pants for sleeping in or does anyone know of any others, would be an idea for another light weight trip as you wouldnt need a tent or anything.

I've slept in it before, it's very uncomfortable, just a load of big boulders and a 6'x6' approx flat space for sleeping.

It's nice to climb up through, but I wouldn't advise sleeping in it.  You can get right the way up through it without any equipment.

If you look at your map, follow the annalong river 1.5k upstream from where it leaves Annalong wood and lower cove is due west.

Hares Castle is due east after about .75k.

I've no map handy for grid refs but it's easy enough to find.

now your talking chris.

It was looking for that cave that got me into the mournes. possible NI-Wild HQ?

Some info I found..

Walk One. The Annalong Valley, Percy Bysshe and Cove Caves
Height: 350 metres (1150 feet) approx)

Round trip: : 8 Kilometres (6.2 miles)

Time: 3 hours

Level 2 to 3: Easy to moderate

This is a relatively level walk over solid stony and gravel paths, although taking shortcuts off the tracks, across the bog, can be very muddy during wet weather and you can run the risk of twisting ankles on the many small rocks and boulders littering the ground. If you do intend to explore the caves mentioned in this walk, it is highly recommended that you do not do them alone and ideally in the company of an experienced guide.

dont think there are many fish in the mournes. although what I know about fish you could write on the back of a stamp! Its a £2000 fine for fishing with out a licience aswell! as i heard on the radio on my way to fish, (without a licience!) needless to say I turned straight back!

its a £2000 pound fine! you can esaily avoid it if you buy a licience, I don't really care about fishing enough to pay either!
