Slievenaglogh
« on: May 31, 2009 »

We did the walk from Trassey car park along the Trassey trail and up through Hares Gap and when we got there we decided to go to the top of Slievenaglogh. We didn't pay enough attention and went right up the middle of Hares Gap which was quite hard going but satisfying when we got there. We weren't that knackered so Slievenaglogh seemed a good choice - Slieve Bearnagh looked very enticing but I think it would have been too hard for us. We met a couple of walkers at the stile after Hares Gap who said we should go back down there rather than retracing our steps. We took their advice but ultimately never found the path and essentially came right down the side of the mountain. It wasn't the safest and I fell a few times - I'd think in bad or very wet weather it would be pretty unpleasant.

All things considered the weather was glorious with not a cloud in the sky and we had a great time.

Now I'm on the lookout for more good routes through the Mournes but ones preferrably with a well defined path..

This is where we went. Hares Gap is on the right and (I think) the summit of Slievenaglogh is to the left

Hares was steeper than I was expecting but considering farmers still herd their sheep up here I shouldn't complain :D

Looking down from Hares Gap

Slieve Bernagh. I really want to walk this one next but it looks like it might be a little challenging

Woohoo! Summit...

Descending - there's nothing like doing stuff the hard way

It felt way harder than it looks

If there's one thing that winds me up it's people who just park their car wherever is most convenient with no regard for their fellow motorists.

That would be great. Can't decide if I'm fit enough for it or not but I'd give it a go as long as you didn't mind me doing alot of gasping and moaning ;)

I'm definately game. I'll ask the wife if I'm allowed out to play. When would suit? I'm thinking of Sat or Sun 13/14 June?

Forgot about father's day(hope the kids have'nt... 27/28 sounds great.

If you happen to be in bangor that weekend call in to the merry monk beer tavern( it's the same tent that's at the city hall at christmas). I'll be the guy with the beard behind the bar you can have NI-WILD members discount.

What's on in Bangor? Is it the whole fair or just the beer part. When it comes to Belfast City Hall they have the most awesome emu / hog burgers.
