You should have a look at the sigma 70-300mm. I got mine for £86 mint cond. boxed! works out at 105-450mm on the D3000.

I have the Sigma 70-300 for my Canon, think I got it around £120 new but as Chris has said you can get them cheaper than that.  I've had a few telephoto lenses ranging from cheap to expensive, but the Sigma is the one I keep going back to.  It's not spectacular or anything, just a good solid lens that does what you need most of the time for comparatively little money!
