Slieve Moughanmore - Friday 21 Nov 14
« on: November 18, 2014 »

I'm hoping to be joined by a few other forumers and have a go at a summit camp on Slieve Moughanmore on Friday night.

I've not done it before and it could offer a relatively easy walk in (I'm not fit for much else at the moment).    There is a wall that runs across the top which may give a bit of protection from the wind.  The col between it and Pigeon Rock, or further down where the Rowan Tree River meets Rocky Water/Rocky River, could provide a fall back plan if required.

If you are interested drop a reply/PM and we'll see if we can make it happen.

I'm up for this +1. Only issue is the forecast looks like there might be a good bit of rain 9pm-midnight on Friday, if it looks like it might be too wet I may hide in the house  ::)

Are you talking this sort of route:

It gives for dry after 12am, I expect it may change coming up to Friday.  Might be for the worse though!  Forecast for Binnian gives a feels like low of -7. Brrrr

I guess the only thing I thought differently route-wise was just to follow the river right up to the wall where the R of "MORE" is.  At least we could get a lay of the land at the col and then handrail the wall up.

Seems like a good plan. I just plotted a route to the end of the marked track but following the river to the wall seems an easier navigate in the dark.
Do you know how big the Rowan Tree river is, just wondering if it might be messy to cross?

It's a fairly steep climb, going straight at it could throw up a few tricky parts.

The river has to stop before the col being the high point, I suspect it will fade to nothing before then.

Another route would be park in attical and then walk up the eagle valley to the windy gap and up from there

Is that the route that follows the Pigeon Rock River?

You are up above the river yeah, there's a good track right up to windy gap, hop over the stile, then follow the wall on up moughanmore

That's a great looking hike, I've never been up there before. Where around Attical do you park?

I'd second what people are saying here, you can get out in the Mournes all year around with no bother

Just because you can generally go out in the Mournes all year round doesn't mean you necessarily always want to. I could definitely sit in a bathtub of baked beans if I wanted but it doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to spend my Friday night doing it ;)

Are strangers welcome on this?

I promise I'm not scary  :-\

If so, what time are you all planning on departing at?
