Great stuff. Can't believe you were able to stay at 5kg.

Camp was W of Hen Mountain - 235 274 to be precise :)

Great weekend!  Lots of fun, lots of effort.

I have a few photos on Flickr  http://www.flickr.com/photos/twentyclicks/
and a write up on my gear http://www.twentyclicks.co.uk/?p=180
and the race itself.  http://www.twentyclicks.co.uk/?p=183

Well done to all the forum lads!

Well, the camera pushed me over in the end, but then I ate 1kg of food on Sat night  ;D

My team mate was carrying just over 4kg!  but he didn't eat so much and had one of those minimus down sleeping bags.

enjoyed the write up, but be careful of your use of the word claggy, you'll only start another debate  ;D

you mention taking the ibuprofen, would you only take medication when you feel you need it or would it be a good idea to pop a pill before a long walk/run, i sometimes take a paracetemol at the start of a hike if i'm still feeling the effects of the previous hike, although as i'm getting fitter i find i need these less and less

Having spent the same Saturday in the Mournes, I would concur that the weather was the very definition of claggy!  And I did mention that word somewhere around the summit of Slievelamagan :D

EDIT: Nice write up Craig, cheers for posting!  Unfortunately I made my post before reading your report, so was shocked to see "claggy" being used to describe chocolate!  As Liam suggests, another debate may ensue ;D  Well done on a great result!

It was more to numb me a bit for sleep and maybe to help with the muscles (although they were more crampy than sore).  I was told competitors often start day 2 with Lemsip as it is warm and has paracetamol in it, and I munched my daily allowance of all painkillers the first time I tried the WHW due to the pain of 25kg, but I usually never touch them unless lying sick in bed wanting to feel better.  It's almost laziness.
I now take pain as a sign something needs changed and worry about masking it which may make things worse.  If I'm stiff from a walk or run, usually a lighter walk or run loosens things up again.  Personal preference, but does get you through in some situations: don't suffer needlessly!

and as for "claggy" - it sounds like a made up word.  To me, it derives from "lagging" like insulation and implies a coating of some sort, hence the association with the chocolate as it sticks in your mouth and throat.
I can also understand use with regards the weather as the clouds stick all over the hills and you can't quite peel them off - they smother and coat you.

great word  :D

i've always felt the same about painkillers, but when i have to get to a summit before dark i do like a pre-emptive strike knowing i have the night to sleep it off  ;D  like the lempsip idea though, if only i could be bothered carrying a stove up, although my flask is 400 grams, damn you people, you now have me weighing things on the kitchen scales  >:( ;D

A hardened hiker doesn't drink lemsip as the water's too heavy, they snort it :)
