The Hive - Perfect Summit BBQ?
« on: May 04, 2010 »

I've been waiting to find out a bit more about "The Hive" upgrade kit for the Honey Stove, and BPL have now posted up a product page with some more information.  Clicky here.

Might make for a good summit BBQ?  The sections could be split between each other to save weight.  I'm not sure what fuel they are suggesting using, presumably still wood burning.  That would mean also bringing up enough wood to cook the grub, but the size of wood the stove burns best with is no bigger than a pencil so it wouldnt weigh too much split between everyone.

I'm also wondering if you can buy charcoal pre-saturated in flammable bags like you get in disposable BBQ's?  If you could buy a bag like that, and if it would fit on the base grill of The Hive you would have an excellent setup.

Only downside I see is that it doesn't appear to come with a top grill to set your grub on.  It's a pity they didn't design a larger version of the existing top grill that comes with the Honey Stove as you can throw your bacon, sausages etc. directly on it.  I suppose you could modify the grill out of a disposable BBQ or even cut some chicken wire to the right size.

It would also make a good wood burning fire for a group in places like summits where it would be nice to have a fire but you can't due to lack of wood etc.  This could be used like a hobo stove for a bit of warmth and light and is surely better than a glow stick?  Worth a look any way :)

Google seems not to think so....but I did see this? Can't confirm the diameter but it may even fit in the Honey Stove as is.

Wonder how practical it would be to chop one of the big BBQ bags apart in four bits and stapling the edges together, then storing them in separate zip lock bags until needed?

Actually, on that note I wonder if you could just pre-saturate some charcoal and bung it in a zip lock bag?  Shouldn't leak or dry out so when you were ready to go you could just empty the contents on to the base grill and light.  Nothing like keeping things simple (and light!).

Tent pegs would definitely work for the grill as I've tried them on the smaller Honey Stove configuration.  I'd definitely consider this folding grill though:

My Mrs would be all for this idea as well....she's itching to reclaim back some space in the garage (and attic) taken up by PC graveyard. :o

I have one of those too. But as I keep telling her, you never know when you might need a perfectly serviceable 486 DX4!

(risking taking yet another thread off topic and boring non-IT folks) side note: I just dumped an old PII-400 carcase at the weekend, the CPU still had a price sticker on it from Computer Store (ex. of Gt. Victoria Street) displaying the princely sum of £531. :o

Oh yes. I remember buying 2Meg of RAM that cost me £80 about a million years ago.
