The Mourne Mountains Landscape Partnership is delighted to announce the release of a suite of short films that help to raise awareness of the rich built and industrial heritage of the Mourne area. The films have been produced to showcase a number of projects that have been enhanced in recent months, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery and the NI Rural Development Programme (via the Down Rural Area Partnership).
Camilla Fitzpatrick, MMLP Scheme Manager, commented “These films are a great educational resource and will help to raise awareness of our unique heritage. They help to bring to life the stories of the landscape, raising awareness among local communities and providing interesting focal points for visitors to the area”.

GRANITE TRAIL – this film explores the heritage of granite extraction from the area immediately above Newcastle Harbour, linking Millstone, Thomas’s and Drinneevar quarries. David Thompson, National Trust – “The National Trust is delighted to have partnered with the Mourne Mountains Landscape Partnership, Down District Council and Forest Service in the development of this important trail, which offers the walker a natural and industrial heritage experience”

THE HISTORY OF TOLLYMORE FOLLIES - this film relates the history of many of the structures within Tollymore Forest Park, describing how their design and function linked to the lives of those living in Tollymore House.

TOLLYMORE FOLLIES RESTORATION – this second film on the follies explains the delicate processes involved in their recent restoration, and explains some of the techniques used to help preserve the structures for future generations to enjoy. Mark Parker, Forest Service (NI) – “Forest Service is pleased to have been a partner in the restoration work for the Follies at Tollymore Forest Park. We recognise the importance of maintaining these built heritage links with the past and the need to provide good interpretation about the various structures for visitors to the forest”.

WATER TOWERS – the final film in the suite of 4 focuses on structures that many people are aware of, but perhaps have never visited. The footage allows the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape and gain an understanding as to how these structures came about. Celine Rodgers, NI Water - “We are delighted the Mourne Heritage Trust has brought the Water Towers and other features of the Mournes to life in this series of films. They will make an excellent resource for the visiting public and education groups who have an interest in the Mournes and the rich history that can be found within them.”
