Who's up for a bit of fishing
« on: June 12, 2013 »

It's that time of year again! I've not managed to make it out fishing much these last few years and I really fancy getting the rod wet this year (well line!). Does anyone fancy a few fishing days / evenings? Anything would be cool, sea / fresh / fisheries, it's more about the fun than the fish.

We could even get a competition organised if there was enough interest. I'm sure NI-Wild would fork for a prize!

Id be well up for it, id probably be more geared up for a spot of sea fishing mind you, a little coastal camp and a day with a rod sounds good to me.
Would you be thinking of North coast or Ardglass direction redleader?

Totally flexible chum. I'm game for anything! Ardglass direction would probably make the most sense as we're generally out that direction at the Mournes anyhoo.

Ardglass would be the perfect location for this.  I camped at a wee cove called Sheeplands last year with the kids and there would be about a mile of accessible coast for running a fishing comp.  Ton's of space for tents too so we could combine the fishing comp with a camp.

Photos of the Sheeplands (Two minutes walk outside of Chapeltown, Arglass) can be found here

I went pike fishing last night for the first time and caught quite an impressive fish if I must say so myself.  It put up a good fight but I won the battle.

For bait I used a baby cod that I caught on Thursday night from my canoe in Strangford Lough:

The Lake is the wee hidden one in Killinchy that I have permission to use:

I used a basic Float, Sinker and Pike Trace (Wire rig with 2 Triple Hooks) and the baby cod as dead bait.  The lunch box to the left was a hastily thrown together Peppered Pork, Mash Potato and Pepper Sauce comb to feed me as the fishing trip was a spare of the moment thing, with minimal time to prepare, and I didn't want to be sitting by the lake starving.

And here is Mr Pike who thought he was dining on a Cod Supper for his dinner  ;)

Mr Pike was released to fight another day though  ;)

So definitely, lets get a fishing comp organised... I've got the fishing bug again!!!
