A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after he fell about 50 metres while walking in the Mourne Mountains.
He sustained injuries to his head, neck and chest when he fell from Slieve Binnian at around 4.30pm on Monday.
Mourne Mountain Rescue said the man was later found at the base of an area known as the water slabs in the Annalong Valley.
A spokesman said the man was treated at the scene for "multiple injuries".
An Irish Coastguard helicopter later airlifted the man to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
A spokeswoman for the Belfast health trust said he was in a critical condition on Monday night.

Not nice to hear. Hope he has a full and swift recovery.
Does anyone know what section is known as the water slabs? I was up and around Binnian Lough and Douglas Crag on Sunday so was perhaps close to the area where the accident happened.
