The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team celebrated the launch of their two new Mountain Rescue Ambulances on Saturday 29 November at The Burrendale Hotel, Newcastle. The team have been fundraising for many years and wish to thank all of their army of supporters and fundraisers and people whom they have rescued for bringing the dream to a reality.

The team received a huge boost in their fundraising efforts thanks to £66,675 of European Union funding from the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme. The funding was made available through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the local Down Rural Area Partnership . With assistance from County Down Rural Community Network, the Team were able to raise nearly 75% of the cost of the new vehicles from the rural development grant, but they still needed nearly £30,000 to realise their dream of having two additional four wheel drive ambulances to cope with the increasing demand for a rescue service in the Mourne Mountains. The new vehicles complement the existing vehicles which are aging but which will still provide a key role in bringing team members and equipment to the rescue scene.
