A large number of tyres have been dumped illegally in countryside near the Mourne Mountains.

It has been estimated from photos that around 60-80 tyres were dumped beside Yellow Road near Hilltown over the weekend.

The vandals have dodged the charges for disposing properly of tyres and they have also increased the challenge for authorities recovering the tyres by dumping them far from the road over difficult terrain.

SDLP MLA Karen McKevitt called it an “outrageous act of vandalism” and said those responsible “are beneath contempt”.

“In an abhorrent display of selfishness, these criminals have prioritised their pockets over this area of outstanding natural beauty,” she said.

The South Down MLA encouraged anyone with information on illegal dumping to bring it forward to the police.

“Illegal dumpers are a plague on our countryside who give little thought to the preservation of our environment or the dangers of their actions.”
