Title: Camping in the Mournes
Post by: ModBot on May 03, 2009
I'm looking for wild camping spots in the Mournes. Preferrably not too far from secure parking but not too close to alcopop drinking morons. I used to go to Annalong quite alot but judging by how much rubbish there is there I'm a bit put off.

Anyone any ideas?

That really is the biggest challenge that we all face. The only advice I can give is to try and get a private permission somewhere where you will be safe from the Booze brigade.

You could also try going to some of the less touristy areas, such as the Sperrins or the Antrim hills. These are considerably less visited and it is seldom that you will be disturbed there if you pick a secluded spot to camp.

I really depends on your style of camp........ there are lots off areas up around the ice house(donard wood) as long as you don't make a mess. But if you use a bivvi and tarp you really find some beautiful spots. I'll give you one to try.

Head toward Slieve Beg form Annalong If you fancy a nice scramle head up the Devils coachroad  then summit cove if not take the easier option of walking up Cove( there is a well trodden path) once up there you will have a great view of Slieve bernagh (and those wonderful tors) and Ben Crom Resevoir. Pitch you tarp on a suitable spot using one off the many slabs, fire up your stove and watch the sun set behind Slieve Bernagh.

One off the best spots in the mournes to watch the sunrise/sunset.

That is a great spot. Also if you head up the Trassey onto the Hares gap then just head down towards the Ben Crom reservoir there are a few pretty flat areas were you pitch a tarp/tent.

Is that where the shelter stone is?

I think the shelter stone is up on a small plateau on Cove mountain just over looking Ben Crom. But not 100%.

Not sure? Do you remember when were going to camp on Cove we passed the large stone but there was water running round it?

I'll check my book on the Mournes it shows a picture and the location of it.

Hi
There's a lovely spot about 400 mts from lough shanna. Just follow the river that flows out of it, you'll come to a small gorge. I hav'nt been there for years but it's as if no one has ever found the place It should be alright for a bivy but you may not be able to pitch a tent.

there's a nice wee camp site on Craigdoo in the Spelga and Buttermountain area, that i use sometimes, there's a loughin at it for water supply, though best to filter/ boil it first if using for drinking.   the is a little shelter at the side of the loughin depending on wind direction.  its a good area for night nav practice..
