Mourne Way Marathon (13 Jun 09)
« on: April 23, 2009 »

Mournes - Newcastle - Rostrevor, Co Down

Fed up running on the roads, pounding all those miles around cities and towns whilst training for Marathons, Half Marathons and 10k races? Or are you fell runner looking for that race that is a little different from all the others on the calendar? For 2009 a newly formed local business, 26 Extreme, have designed a race that will ensure you get as much fresh air as possible and there won't be a traffic light, roundabout or concrete jungle in sight!! Just Coast, Sea and Countryside.

26 Extreme are pleased to announce this new and unique event to Northern Ireland – The Mourne Way Marathon. This is a Marathon which is almost entirely off road. The event date is Saturday 13 June 2009.

In addition to the Marathon there will also be a Half Marathon and a 10k run / walk incorporated into the route - these races, like the Marathon, will also finish in Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor. There will also be a “Challenge Walk” on the day along the full 26 mile route of the Mourne Way.

The main event will see competitors race the 26 miles of the Mourne Way from Newcastle to Rostrevor, Co Down. This route is a linear route, almost entirely off road, traversing the foothills of the Mourne Mountains passing Tollymore Forest, Fofanny Dam, Spelga Dam, Leitrim Lodge and Yellow Water before arriving at the finish in Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor.

The Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a unique; largely granite landscape shaped by ice and man, with stunning vistas of coast, sea and countryside and all competitors will get a chance to take in these sights along the route.

A newly formed Warrenpoint business - 26 Extreme - which specialises in the organisation and management of high profile events will be organising and staging this event. It is envisaged that this race will become a great success in the local area and with it bringing a tourism boost to the local economy.
