Title: How to easily post pictures
Post by: admin on January 22, 2013
We love to see images posted on NI-Wild, it makes everyone excited to get outdoors. However, we have limited storage space so we'd prefer if possible that people host their images externally. One of the fastest and easiest sites to use is imgur.com (http://www.imgur.com). It's a free image hosting service that is very easy to use and provides the code you need to get your picture on our forum without you needing to understand what's happening. Just to note, if you already use and are happy with a different hosting service then that's no problem, there's no reason to change, this is just for people looking for an easy way to get pics on.

What to do:
Example of code:
Code: [Select]

Imgur allows grouping of images into albums for easy organisation which is fairly easy to do. You can also get a link to the whole album if you wish.

Please post requests for clarification or further recommendations beneath.

I'd recommend imgur over Flickr for ease of use, i was trying to post a Gif file with transparency in my signature box using the BBcode from Flickr but it kept leaving a white box around the image. After multiple attempts it seems that Flickr converts either Gif or PNG files and neglects the transparency. I had no trouble with imgur and you don't actually need to make an account on imgur to upload images as well.

Just to note, if you don't create an account with Imgur you can't remove or edit pictures later unless you keep a copy of all the codes they give you. Imgur also has a wooly policy on rentention of images. If they're not accessed at all for 6 months they may be removed. They also scale down larger pictures.

Bottom line is they're spot on for things like sharing images on a forum but I wouldn't go keeping your prized pics of the wife only in Imgur!

Ah, wasn't aware of that, thanks for the info, cheers Admin.  :)

Not going to plug it openly here but I run a small gallery for some of the forum members. It's based on piwigo - backed up weekly and I don't set any limits on usage.

If anyone's interested PM me.
