Flash issues
« on: February 18, 2010 »

I'd like to get a better result from indoor pictures under electric light but a proper flash is a bit expensive for me at the mo. I keep reading that the issue with the builtin flash is more to do with flashing directly at the subject rather than the quality of the flash and the the solution even with a quality flash is to bounce the light off the ceiling. Does this mean that a viable alternative for the beginner is something like the Lightscoop and if so could I just make one myself somehow?

I eould get one of these wee jobbies, and for £5.99 its gotta be worth a try, or you could make one from a milk carton,

I've been messing about with flash results recently. There's lots of simple things you can do.

-Hold a sheet of toilet paper over the flash. different thicknesses give varying results
-Use a translucent 35mm film case and cut it so it fits over the flash to act as a diffuser, you can also slide a coloured sweet wrapper        inside the case to act like a gel
-Use a milk carton to make a diffuser
-Cut some thickish white paper/card into a curve and secure it under the flash to bounce it
-hold a mirror and bounce the flash

There's loads of things you can try, each wih their own varying degress of success and each providing different results!
