Water Pipe on Slieve Commedagh
« on: August 01, 2011 »

Does anyone know if the water pipe on Commedagh has water flowing from it all year round?

Also, it's a bit of an oddily, does anyone know who put it there, why and where the water comes from?

A map with it's exact location would be handy too, please!

I recall this being mentioned by another member sometime ago.  They used it for refilling bottles.  If you search about the forum you might come across that topic.  The member might be able to offer an exact location.

I've seen that too. I'd need to look at it again, but my memories of previous ponderings was that it was something do do with the path that was constructed to provide a durable surface for walking. I suspect that it might be to prevent wash-away, but I'm probably completely wrong.

Ah right, thanks. On Saturday we were walking on the other side of the wall which explains why we couldn't see it!

Yup - that's the spot. The ground is brighter green around the area due to the plentiful moisture - can be seen from many a mountain away (Bernagh). May be a useful clue to keep an eye out for generally when scouting ahead for possible water locations in the uplands.

So does water flow from the pipe all year round and does anyone know any of it's history?

No idea about why it's there.
As for all-year round, we may need reminded to have a look next winter. I have an ice-axe now, so can recce for you when the big freeze returns  :D

It was more if it would dry up in the summer when it had been dry for a while.

No idea about why it's there.

Just to add: I was told by the Mourne Heritage Trust ranger that it's a natural spring. Think: a thin deep crack in the mountain with water being forced up it by water pressure from below. Then someone drilled a pipe into the spring to make it easier to flow out. It's quite rare at high levels, he mentioned that there was another spring found recently, but I didn't catch it's location.
