Bannock
« on: August 20, 2012 »

We made a bit of bannock around the fire on Saturday night and it really was awesome. For such an easy food to make it has a real multitude of different recipes and varieties.

We were just going with 3 parts self raising flour to 1 part milk powder with lashings of sugar and some chocolate bits for good measure. Mix to a dough of whatever consistency suits (you can cook it wrapped round a stick if you make it thick) and cook until golden brown.

Since it's basically just a flat bread I'm guessing you could make savoury versions too.

Does anyone have any other recipes or fun advice?

Loading it with honey rather than sugar can be nice - and also increases its life due to honey's antimicrobial properties :)

Traditionally bannock is a savoury flatbread, I'm like yourself though RL I prefer it as a cake like bannock. Next time your doing it try adding ripped up marshmallows with the chocolate bits! Bannock with butter and honey is fantastic, so is making it with hedgerow berries it turns out multicoloured and also tastes class, nothing better than bannock and coffee around the fire!!

I'd add a pinch of salt and some coconut oil too. but adoing coconut milk powder is also quite good in addition to oil.

To me cake means something like a scone, higher and narrower, if done right baking style. Not like a thick pancake style thats easier frying or grilling.

Stuffing a cake with almost anything. My favourites are some pepperami sticks sliced up with cubes of spiced or smoked cheese. Topped with cayenne. It's nearly as good as pitta pizza's.

Honey rubbed into the gaps of multiple cuts not only fills it with less mess but make it so so much sweeter. Even better if you slice the cake and fry each slice first. Then add all the slices together with honey.
It's almost like pancake piles.

Chocolate powder and chocolate bits, used for baking store well.

Core the cake and pop a bananna in there then heat a little longeron a pan, gently push the core down into the cake without lifting the cake. It squeezes potassium right into the sides.

Cinamin and nutmeg, makes a nice easy twist.
