Aloha!
« on: September 30, 2016 »

Hi folks, my name is Jim from Carrickfergus and I've been meaning to get into the outdoor life for too long now, my primary interest is foraging, I'd like to meet someone who could assist with this as I plan a life on the open road in the next couple of years and would like to know how to get a meal if times get tough ha ha, in return I can offer to show you how to make a sling out of old rope  ;)

I'm pretty sure they don't grow on trees. Or so my parents said continuously for about 20 years ;)

Hi folks, thanks for the welcome. Red: there's pretty much nothing I won't eat, I know the basics like crustaceans, Seaweed, nettles etc, I'd like to know more about other greens and mushrooms.

Hi Boron, thank you. I'm going to buy a Mercedes sprinter, high roof, long wheelbase, then buy a caravan as cheap as possible and swap the internals. I'm still toying with the idea of using a solar panel or a wind turbine or both, anything to keep travelling costs to a minimum.

Lol, snap Jim, I've been researching Diy conversions for the past year.I am still undecided as to do it from scratch or buy one and tweek it to meet my own needs.I was thinking of doing the west and south coast of Ireland during the summer months and heading to Southern Europe for the winter months. I have fished all over Ireland for years and always in campers with friends we lived off what we caught and foraged with the odd treat in between. We have used the classic VW, the old Talbot and right up to brand spanking new 60k jobs. Many times we left the van and lived on or around islands on the big lakes or shore lines.
All the best,
Keep in touch.

Boron that's pretty much exactly the same as what I have planned, seems I'm not the first person to think if it ha ha, I did a bit of research and discovered that you can hunt with a bow down south and Europe, to this extent I've learned how to flint knap and made my first arrowhead. I think I'll likely build my own aa it's likely the only way I'll be able to afford it lol.

Sounds good Jim, I have never hunted with a bow, but I know someone who has made his own for years.I think he uses seasoned ewe wood. I've had good success over the years with traps n snares.
Good luck.

Yew seems to be the popular choice among the artisans. Where are you from Boron? I've never hunted with the bow either, I haven't even shot it yet, first time for everything.

Hi again Jim,
I'm from Belfast, never hunted with a bow but have used them before at targets.I remember using a powerful compound bow and hitting targets at 300mtrs.
