Title: anyone see "Alone in the Wild" on channel 4?
Post by: Cardnim on September 14, 2009
Caught this new series on Channel 4 last Thursday - anyone else see it?:
http://uk-tv-guide.com/pick-of-the-day/17-9-2009/documentary-alone-in-the-wild-ii/ (http://uk-tv-guide.com/pick-of-the-day/17-9-2009/documentary-alone-in-the-wild-ii/)

Started off quite annoying as the guy didnt seem to know much, but as it went on, and his battle with the ever present bears continued, I foudn myself really enjoying it.
Not too mention you get to see some awesome scenery and wildlife, and a small amount of bushcraft too.

Next episode is this Thursday (17th) I think?

Hey Wolfy, sorry I didnt reply to you sooner m8.
Been up to my eyes with work and havent had much time to do anything else.

Got to see the last program last night and overall I enjoyed it.
Despite what CG and others are saying about it being exaggerated for television, I still enjoyed it.
It let me see some truly amazing scenery and I dont think anyone could argue that the fella was definatley going through some emotions... thats always good TV.

As far as bushcraft goes - woeful.
...and my Mrs thought the guy was really annoying and a bit of a whiner... I think I have to agree.

For someone whos "life's dream" was to go out into the Wilds alone, he:
a) knew fart all about what to do when he was there
b) had a very bad mental attitude where he saw the problems and the pressures rather than the solutions and the awesome scenery/situation

Very well sumed up, but at the end of the day im sure he is stronger from the time he lived in his dream. It was not a bad show.

Caught the last episode and to be honest i think now the whole programme was a total wast of my viewing time. He seemed to do nothing but cry and complain throughout. In the last programme although he kept complaining about be hungry he was have second thoughts about shooting the porcupine. If he really WAS starving his emotional state would have changed and he wouldnt have had a problem killing it no second thoughts. D.H. Lawrence comes to mind " I have never seen a wild thing feel sorry for itself. A little bird will fall dead, frozen from a bough, without ever having felt sorry for itself." (Self Pity)

I also just caught the last show and have mixed views about the whole series.

As far as a bushcraft/wilderness adventures goes?....I didn't see anything that would suggest it was a typical documentary advocating bushcraft. The program did nothing to show his techniques of how he actually lived in the wilderness. (But then again, maybe the program wasn't designed to do that)

As for a documentary about a man roughing it in the wilds for as long as he could?.....brilliant. Frought with all the mistakes and shortcomings that most people might come up against in that environment.

If I was to try and find something positive about the whole thing it would be to show beginners/newbies that it is just not all about heading off into the forests and wilds to set up a camp, light a fire and sit around with a load of camping or army suplus gear and a knife.

Just my own thoughts on it, but overall, I did enjoy it for what it was;- light entertainment from the wilderness.

Alan.

I've still got the last one to watch but it doesn't matter what happens now, as long as it was honestly made I still think he had balls for having a go at it.

i recon he needed a good hard slap, and shoulda made more effort to sort his camp out !kleenex slipped up on the sponsorship too i recon lol the big woos!

did you see his attempt at a lean-to shelter? the friggin thing was almost vertical lol.

seriously, he seemed a little light on the old knowledge front,at least thats how it came across.

i mean , if you were going to live off the land then youd want to be comfortable and secure wouldnt you? not stuck in your hammock and tarp when it rained.also, hed have had a lot more fish if he`d set a long line of baited hooks in the water.

i think the whole set-up was designed for armchair tv watching lard arses to havent a clue what to do when theyre in the trees.

still, you wouldnt catch me in bear country without a tank to sleep in  :D
