I haven't done a lot of outdoor climbing but i've never been without my helmet, i've read too many mountaineering books which always involve gruesome incidents  :o

I think if i was climbing outdoors then a helmet would be a necessity, it would be one less thing to worry/stress over.
There's an article about the effectiveness of helmets when cycling here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11110665, it's an interesting read but this quote stands out and is just as applicable to climbing outdoors:

"It's plain and simple that helmets are effective," Ms Lee continues. "If you think of people who have mobile phones, computers, I bet they all have covers on to protect them. You have a skull protecting your brain and if you know anything about computers you know that if you damage a computer you can't load the programme. That's exactly the same with your brain."

Living on the edge there buddy ::), but you have covered your ipad  ;).

That is a good point about how people would protect there phone before there head and I would also be one of those. maybe time to re-think my head wear.

I'm not disagreeing with wearing a helmet, but thought I could add some material I have read along the lines.

For cycling, some people think your better being road aware i.e always looking around you for dangers and not wearing a helmet, than wearing a helmet and not being aware.

I sort of agree with that when it comes to cycling, but I just do both anyway.

I think I also remember some studies about the safety ratings in cars, something along the lines that people who drive a car with a high safety rating are more likely to get hurt because they don't use as much caution than those who have a low safety rating and take care driving.

Nothing to do with climbing helmets, but just some conversation pieces.

Ive been climbing outdoors quite a few times without a helmet, just 1 minor accident on a glacier when an ice axe hit my head causing a small cut.
Would always wear one now though.
You dont have to be climbing to need a helmet - if you ever venture to Tormore crag in Sligo, be sure to have the helmet on when approaching the cliff. So much loose rock falling down if anyone is already climbing.

If I hadn't have worn a helmet kayaking or bouldering I would have probably been 6ft under or had some sort of serious damage done.
