Tollymore Trail 10K Prep
« on: April 01, 2015 »

I've just signed up for the Tollymore Trail 10K in November, having just done a Couch to 5K.

I'll have plenty of time to get prepared, but was thinking of doing it by alternating more hilly terrain with longer distances and finally putting them together.

Most of my running to date has been on relatively flat terrain, so I was thinking of alternating a 5K with more hills and different terrain with longer (up to 10-12K) runs on flatter terrain, putting them together once both feel comfortable.

Any insights or thoughts on this from the panel?

Throw in some hill sprints too, you don't even need a huge hill to do them. Just find somewhere that takes you 20 seconds or so of full pelt to reach the top, then sprint up and walk down, rinse and repeat until your sick.

Will definitely try that, Kilbroney has some perfect spots for that in the bottom park.

Forgot to mention you can do hills in reverse too. If you sprint up then walk down for a set amount of times, then walk up and sprint down. It's handy for developing some technique so you don't do all your downhill sections of a race on your face.
