hi all,

I'm looking at getting a bivy bag for a couple of reasons:

1. to carry with me on long day hikes for emergency use (if severe weather comes in, get lost, hurt etc)

2. I would like to try a night under the stars in a bivy bag!! at this stage i cant see me doing this too much, think i'd prefer the tent but would like to try it.

My budget is tight, any suggestions of something i should be looking at going for?

Tk max do a trek mate one i've been using it for a while and it does the job its only £20, if wanted to go a bit higher Alpkit do the hunka bivy for £30.

Only issue I have is it has no zip (although alot of bivvy bags don't for the obvious reason) which makes it a bit tight (though they do an XL size but it's heavier again).

I did 2 nights under a tarp last year - one at the end of Oct and one at the start of Dec and it was great. I can highly recommend it, even in relatively dodgy weather. (Just get a mozzie net in the summer.

I have a trekmate bivvi bag to and have never had a problem with it.

I'm well game. I defo think we should try and do all 7 before the end of the year.

Where can i get a half decent cheap light tarp?

I'm thinking like a PU coated nylon one would be better than the cheap and nasty blue tarp type ones?

for a trail run those cheap nasty tarps are grand

They can be picked up for a couple of quid and a few extra quid for some bungie cords you'll be set up in no time.

I still use one as I'm a bit cheap and nasty myself

I have a tarp from DD Hammocks. It's good but a bit heavy. You can get ultralight tarps from Backpackinglight.co.uk but they're pricey. I've not used the plastic type tarps - I thought they might make a bit much noise in the wind.

just what i wanted to hear!!

where would be the best place to find one? can you get any other colour rather than blue??

We used those cheap tarps one on side of Ben Crom one nite and the rain and wind was wild, and they kept us dry.They can be got at Nuts corner for bout£2.00

For an emergency bag I just carry one of the orange, polythene bags with me on day trips. Always figure it will at least keep me dry and keep the worst of the elements off if I get stuck. Pretty visible as well if any one was trying to find you! On an overnighter I don't bother with it if have a tent and sleeping bag with me anyway.

I'm rather interested in the whole tarp/bivvi thing, would love to try it out. How much of a weight saving is there with using a tarp? Presumably you need to bring a tarp, bivvi, sleeping bag and roll mat. So the weight saving is tarp + bivvi vs. tent?
