Annalong Wood
« on: March 15, 2010 »

Hi guys,

Just wondering what Annalong Wood is like for camping? i've never really had a proper look down that end.

Plenty of firewood?

what about fast flowing water?

How likely is there to crowds drinking, noise etc?

Cheers

Andy

havent camped there yet just been up for a walk, and a cycle, checked out a few spots down by the river. the water was very low but thats prob the norm in mid summer, u r able to hop from rock to rock were i was, also spotted a few trout in some pools. id say the further u go up the less drinkers u will find as they dont like to carry beer too far lol. id say theres plenty of fire wood.

i always fancied camping up there but wasnt sure if car would be safe.  i used to go to a good spot near mourne museum theres a small wood a river and a quarry u can swim in and it holds some small brown trout. its not far from annalong wood. anyone else been to that spot?

Built a stacked debris wall shelter there once and spent the weekend in it. When we went to go home, one of the Guys had got the rear window of his car put in, so be careful of where you park.

I've camped there loads of times, If you follow the woodline looking up to hares gap there's little flat areas that are perfect, river flowing on the left and the wood on the right. Make sure you get plenty of fire wood in daylight as it's quite tricky getting it at night!

I have the same issues with Carrick Little car park. It's a nightmare for vandalism. I've not been broken into but I know plenty of people that have. Only thing I can think of is to get the Mourne Rambler bus up when it's running. Shame because it's a great spot.

I've never heard anything about Bloody Bridge car park but I'd assume it would be as bad. Quite a trek to Annalong Wood from Bloody Bridge tho.

theres a laneway takes u up past mourne museum, if u go up there u can park at the bend just past a dip in lane where a stream runs thru. its a lil bit of a hike tho but car shud be safe. i used to go on up the lane and reverse into one of the fields just before this ladys house , she was great until some ejitt parked on the lane and she had to walk to her house in the pouring rain at night. so from then on  she doesnt allow any parking up there, well that was about 5 years ago. u cud always ask , annalong wood is behind the hill from her house .  its mostly all up hill on way there tho.

I'm heading there this sat and sunday with a few friends. I was planning on parking just infront, alongside the gate and the stile point where it crosses the Mourne Wall. Is this a sensible option?

We used to park up there (like 12 years ago) for camping so the lads didn't have to lug their lager as far and we never had any trouble and I have seen cars up there since but I really have no idea who owns the lane or how happy they are about people using it. Plus there's only space for maybe 2 cars.
