Rescue volunteers had to pull injured walkers off the Mournes three times in one day over the weekend.

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team, who are based in Newcastle, Co Down , worked with a Coastguard helicopter and the Ambulance Service to get a young person and two women to safety after they got into difficulty in fairly remote areas close to Slieve Donard.

In an early post on their Facebook page, the Mourne MRT said they had two callouts, one at 1.15pm when the “team were called to assist a young person who had fallen and sustained an arm injury close to the Donard/Comedagh Col”.

The ‘col’ is a stone structure that sits along the Mourne Wall between Donard and Commedagh and is very difficult to get to. The MRT say they “responded, assessed and treated him and assisted him to NIAS care”.

But they added: “While we were dealing with this incident a second call came in for an adult female who had fallen on Slieve Donard and sustained a head injury.

“The team located her, treated and stabilised her and carried her to the Donard/Comedagh Col for evacuation to hospital via Coastguard Rescue helicopter 999 from Prestwick. 17 team members responded and the team stood down at 1750.”

But as the volunteers thought they were making their way home, they receiced yet another call, they say.

They said: “At 1813, just as team members were making their way home, a third call came in to assist an adult female who had fallen on the Glen River track on Slieve Donard and sustained a lower leg injury. The team responded and treated the casualty with assistance from an NIAS paramedic and our own team Doctor and evacuated the casualty by stretcher to a Knights of Malta Ambulance in Donard Forest for onward transfer to hospital. 14 members responded and the team stood down at 2030.”

The Mourne MRT has been rescuing people for more than 50 years and they say they cover around 90 per cent of all mountain rescues througout Northern Ireland.
