Hundreds of fish are found dead
« on: September 22, 2009 »

There has been a major fish kill on the Shimna river in County Down.

It has been reported that more than 200 dead fish have been found below the Fofany water treatment works near Spelga dam.

Fisheries officers at the scene have found the carcasses of 150 trout and 55 salmon.

The Environment Agency has said it is investigating the source of the pollution.

A spokesman said they were alerted by a member of the public on Sunday.

"Water quality inspectors from the NIEA visited the site and confirmed that there had been a fish kill and carried out an investigation in order to identify the source," he said.

"A potential source was identified, however there was no discharge at the time the NIEA inspectors were on site and the investigation continues."
