Lesser Spotted Ulster Visits Annalong
« on: October 31, 2014 »

Quote
Joe Mahon visits the picturesque seaside village of Annalong in County Down on the next Lesser Spotted Ulster this Friday 31 October at 8pm.

Joe visits the harbour in the popular holiday destination which was once the departure point of some of Ulster’s best known exports such as Mourne granite.

Set against the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains, Joe visits the local museum to learn more about the history of the herring industry, from fishing to smoking and curing to exporting.

During his stay Joe discovers the traditional method of locating herring shoals as well as the origin of the phrase ‘a red herring’. Turning to the scenic mountain scenery Joe receives a lesson in building the distinctive stone walls of the Mournes, including some useful techniques for lifting the heavy stones.

To round off, Joe visits the abandoned Silent Valley Dam and chats to an engineer who reveals why the dam was built in the wrong place and how he is determined to right a century old injustice.

Viewers can join in the conversation by tweeting ‘@utv’ during the show using hashtag #LesserSpotted.

Sponsored by Glens of Antrim Potatoes, Lesser Spotted Ulster returns Friday 31 October at 8pm on UTV.
