Title: Which type of bike to get
Post by: chem_j on December 14, 2014
Hi,
Thinking of getting a bike through the cycle to work scheme. I would be using it for commuting to work (approximately 15 miles each way) and I was maybe thinking of eventually doing something like the duathlons that 26extreme run. What sort of bike do you think would be best, road or hybrid?
Thanks!

Hi there  :)

Both bikes you have suggested above both have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you are planning on using roads the whole way then I would suggest a road bike, especially with the distances you said you would be covering. I do 7 miles a day to get to work and back on a road bike and its a lot easier. I was using a mountain bike for 2 months but it was a lot harder going due to the tyre size.

I personally don't understand these hybrid bikes and I think you don't get much for your money in most. The brakes and gears are always a let down in my opinion.  You could always opt for a mountain bike with lock out suspension and road wheels for weekdays then change it about for the weekend  ;) it will all depend on your plans for the bike

There is no benefits of a hybrid. Unlike road, mountain, bmx & cross bikes the hybrid isn't a specialist bike. If you're cycling on the road then quite simply a road bike is the best. Then it's just a case of what type of road bike suits you best. If you're just using it as a means of transport, and you're going to be using it all year round then it's not a racer you're looking for.

You need a bike that allows for wider tyres so it can be used in all weather... also a low bottom bracket drop and high handlebar stem will offer comfort over performance.

These three bikes are perfect for getting about on.

Kona Honkey Tonk. Best bang for your buck.

Kona Kapu. Basically a better version of the Honky Tonk. Higher quality of steel used on frame as well as a better spec.

Surly Pacer. Overpriced like all Surly bikes but a fantastic bike like all Surly bikes.

hi Chem J a cycle cross would be a good choice.  They're like a road bike but stronger frame and wheels and with knobbly tyres at the same dimension as a road bike. Frame geometry is slightly more relaxed than a road bike. Can go easily on single track and can take racks with heavy loads, like a 5 year old on a bike seat etc. If you get a spare set of wheels you have them set up with slick road tyres and you'll be able to keep up with the roadies alright. I have a specialized tricross and its a great versatile bike. Happy hunting

Knobbly tyres will make you tired more quickly.........

All I know is that cycling a mountain bike for longer distances on good roads is very tiring. If I was looking at a 30 mile daily commute I'd defo want to be doing it on a road bike  :o Depends on fitness I suppose.
