Just tilt your gas burner more than 45 degrees in any direction.  Done and dusted!   ;D

Even if they dont get to bite, they annoy the hell out of me.

Sounds like walking is over until about October, November?

I did the seven sevens route on Saturday and didn't get a whole lot of bother from them, apart from a 5 minute stop to fill up water bottles at the Ben Crom River.  Boy they got me bad though, I was wailing my arms about like Michael Stipe.  Strangely I was able to sit down on the Ben Crom dam for a bite of lunch with not so much as peck on the cheek from them.

Walking is still very much on, just plan your stops a bit higher up and in the breeze.

agree with whoRya - stopping to refill at the river I literally could see hundreds all over my black kit and my legs and arms are covered in evil bites, but everywhere else was pretty good... even moving along the trail near the river I had no bother. Was only in the shelter of the river cut itself.

So yeah, walking is still on... just don't stop  ;D

I was thinking of getting a camp somewhere, I know the higher with wind is better, but to be honest not sure of any sites that offer this.

Camped last year quite low and had to pack up and go home, total waste of time.

I just find them a real pain and just can't be bothered with them anymore.
