Cave Hill Bivvy question?
« on: February 05, 2015 »

Got a Bivvy bag for Christmas and I am itching to use it. I was considering cave hill for a not to far from home one to get me started. Has anyone ever bivvied there before? Are there any spots near the caves or napoleans nose that you could spend a night undiscovered? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi There
To be honest, I have never bivvied there, I would be scared of uninvited visitors because it is so close to the city. If you do bivvi, I would suggest that you stay away from tracks, car parks or anything that might attract passers by. The beauty of bivvying is that you can hide very easily - unless your bag is bright orange!

Cavehill's an excellent spot for a quick overnighter. We bivvied just below the caves beside the devils punchbowl and a solo camp on Collinward which is just behind Cavehill. They were both quiet nights and didn't see anybody else til the morning.

I've had this on my list of to-dos for a while.  Nice to see a couple of examples from 'Yak.

Bring something you can pull over your eyes, its surprisingly well lit from the light pollution.

I've considered it a few times but was always put off with it being so urban. Suppose in late, out early and bivvying might be quiet enough. I have seen groups camping up there before in the lower forests so it defo does go on.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I didn't get any notification that anyone had!

SpecimenYak thanks the videos were great. I liked the look of the Colinward one, It looks like a nice spot and off the beaten track a bit. I have a bright red alpkit bivvy so I won't be too stealth. Ed thanks for the tip of I will pack my buff and pull it over my eyes! Will hopefully be able to get out soon.

Lol, sounds messy. Though I can't see a bunch of pissed teens being bothered with the steep climb up to the top, I'd say it would be okay up there, you could sit in peace and watch the carnage below :)

Interesting to see the police dispersing crowds that were using the park. Wonder were they actually doing anything wrong other than being drunk in a public park in a large group.

Seconds thoughts I think I might stick to the Mournes  ::) http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/alert-over-illegal-raves-as-belfast-police-move-300-young-people-from-park-31004198.html
