Getting Back
« on: August 19, 2013 »

Having suffered from inflamed joints in my feet for the past few months I am finally feeling able to get back to the Mournes on Saturday morning, and my brother in law coming over from England and looking to go walking with me is the perfect reason, I am still a bit timid on my feet but just need to get back to the hills I love so dearly.

He has never been in The Mournes before an this is the route I am planning for him...

Start at Carrick Little, take in Binnian summit, over by the Buzzards Roost, up Slievelamagan, then Cove and Beg to the Brandy Pad, follow it to the wall at the Bog of Donard and walk the wall back to Annalong Wood.

Can't wait and I hope the feet hold up as i'm scared of flying and don't fancy a ride in a helicopter, plus I don't want to be shown up by a London city boy.

This is a great route, we did the same but went from the Brandy Pad up Donard then following the wall home.

It's a lovely walk, you'll have a ball.

That's a great route.  You could have a good look at an option to cut short between Slievelamagan and Cove Mountain so if the city boy is struggling or if the joints are tight you can vary the route on the day.  Enjoy getting back out there.

Well the feet and the city boy held up to the challenge, we ended up following the same route as Red Leader had suggested and took in Donard as well.

The exact route was: Start at Carrick Little, Binnian Summit, Slievelamagan Summit, Cove Summit, Beg, Past Devil's Coachroad, onto Brandy Pad, Donard Summit and then walked the wall to Long Seefin, cut through the forest and back onto the Head Rd and back to the car park.

My brother in law loved the Mournes and has asked me for another day out when he's back over at Xmas, and I was just so happy my feet were able to cope, which means I can get back to some serious hiking, happy days!
