Need a Firesteel

Can anyone recommend a solid but reasonably priced firesteel. I got a "Scout" one from Tiso or Millets for about £12 and it's already starting to give out.

I've used a few different ones. the best and most consistant ones I've used are the "Light my Fire" brand. Some of the others can be a bit inconsistant in the spark department. When you meet up with us Jonno, I'll let you try some from different makers.

Great plan. Interesting question. Is a rod coated with a substance that will wear away with use or is the whole rod capable of sparking and should only wear away over significant period?

The whole rod should spark right to the core.

The whole rod should spark right to the core.

So does that mean the one I have should last until it's worn down to a stump? It does still spark but is inconsistent so maybe there's life in the old dog yet.

It is a Light My Fire one. It's one of these:

It should do Jonno. I've seen a few wore right to a stump. Mine is a bit thicker and longer  ;) so don't wear out as quickly.
