GPS Maps
« on: January 28, 2019 »

hi
grabbed a Garmin handheld GPS recently

are there any good resources for maps
looking for the Mournes to begin with
i've grabbed the OpenStreetMap map and it seems pretty good but just wondering what others use ?
free is preferred but would pay if it wasn't crazy money, still getting over paying for the device  :P : ;)

I've been using Mapyx for years. Their desktop software isn't great but it's still a fantastic way to plan routes and explore from home. You ca create routes for export to a GPS and import tracks from a GPS to review where you went.

You can get the whole of Northern Ireland @ 50k for £38.00+VAT. They also have the Mournes, Glens of Antrim, Strangford, Lough Erne and the Sperrins @ 25k for £14.99 each.

Ahh, sorry, I did know that. When I had a Garmin it came with basic maps pre-installed but didn't have a desktop app for the computer. I used Mapyx to fill that gap, then eventually binned Garmin completely and got a Satmap instead which did take the Mapyx maps.

I never managed to make TalkyToaster maps work with my Garmin but that was years ago, they look much more polished now. Good luck  8)
